Hawthorn Celtic Tree Sign Meaning

Hawthorn is the sixth sign of the Celtic tree calendar, covering May 13 to June 9, and its archetype is The Illusionist. Tree calendar lore says Hawthorn people show the world one face and keep a more complex one underneath, and that they are strategic and adaptable. Its Ogham letter is Uath.

What it means

Hawthorn looks ordinary for most of the year and then covers itself in blossom, and that double nature is how the sign is read. Hawthorn people often seem easygoing at first, then surprise people with how much is going on inside: plans, opinions, talents they never bothered to advertise. They adapt quickly, read situations well and like to keep a card or two in reserve. They are often funny, curious and better listeners than they let on.

Strengths

Strategic thinking, adaptability, hidden depth, a sharp sense of humor, and the patience to wait for the right move.

Challenges

Keeping people guessing for too long, restlessness, saying yes to everyone's plans before checking their own, and hiding real feelings behind a joke.

Hawthorn dates and Ogham letter

Hawthorn runs from May 13 to June 9 (28 days). Its Ogham letter is Uath, the letter for the sound H. The dates come from the tree calendar Robert Graves set out in The White Goddess (1948): thirteen 28-day months named after Ogham letters in his Beth-Luis-Nion order, plus one spare day, December 23. It is a modern system inspired by the Ogham, not a calendar recorded from the ancient Druids, and scholars think only some of the Ogham letter names first meant trees. On the Western calendar, Hawthorn starts in Taurus and the Sun moves into Gemini around May 21, so roughly the first 8 days are Taurus Suns and the last 20 are Gemini.

The hawthorn in folklore

Hawthorn is the May tree. It blooms around the old May festival of Beltane, and in Ireland a lone hawthorn in a field is a fairy thorn that farmers plough around rather than cut. In 1999 a new road in County Clare was adjusted after locals objected to felling one. In many places it is still thought unlucky to bring the blossom indoors.

How Cosmic Array reads it

Your tree depends only on the day and month you were born, so the year and birth time don't change it. The Architect blueprint shows your Celtic tree next to your Chinese animal, Mayan sign and Egyptian deity, and its written synthesis can set the tree against your Western Sun, Moon and Rising.
