Year of the Ox Meaning

The Year of the Ox describes someone steady and hardworking. The Ox is the second animal of the Chinese zodiac, and people born in an Ox year are said to build their lives slowly and solidly, keep their word and outlast almost anyone through sheer patience.

What it means

The Ox is the sign of honest work. It does not rush and it does not cut corners, and it earns trust by showing up the same way every day. Ox people are often quiet in a group but firm in their views, and once they decide something it is hard to talk them out of it. They tend to value tradition, family and the things they built with their own hands.

Strengths

Diligence, reliability, patience, physical stamina and a calm that steadies the people around it.

Challenges

Stubbornness, resistance to change, difficulty showing feelings and a habit of taking on too much work alone.

Ox years and dates

An Ox year starts at Lunar New Year, not on January 1. Ox years since 1950: Metal Ox, February 15, 1961 to February 4, 1962; Water Ox, February 3, 1973 to January 22, 1974; Wood Ox, February 20, 1985 to February 8, 1986; Fire Ox, February 7, 1997 to January 27, 1998; Earth Ox, January 26, 2009 to February 13, 2010; Metal Ox, February 12, 2021 to January 31, 2022. The next Ox year, a Water Ox, starts on January 31, 2033. If you were born in January or February, check the start date: a birthday before it belongs to the year before.

Element

Every Ox year also carries one of five elements, which cycle so the same element and animal meet only once every 60 years. An Ox born in 1985 is a Wood Ox. The Ox also has a fixed element of its own, Earth, and is a yin sign.

Best and hardest matches

Traditional Chinese astrology puts the twelve animals in four groups of three, and in six opposite pairs. The Ox gets on most easily with the Snake and the Rooster, the other two in its group. Its opposite is the Goat, six years apart, which is said to bring the most friction.

How Cosmic Array reads it

Cosmic Array reads your animal next to your Western Sun sign. Together they give your Primal Zodiac, one of 144 combinations: a Taurus Sun born in an Ox year, for example, is a Mammoth. The Architect blueprint shows your animal, its element and your Primal Zodiac, worked out from the exact Lunar New Year date, and reads them against the rest of your chart.
