The Emperor as Your Birth Tarot Card

The Emperor as a birth tarot card describes someone here to lead by building structure: rules, plans, homes and institutions that last. It is card IV of the Major Arcana. Readers see Emperor people as steady, responsible and protective, the person others turn to when a situation needs order.

What it means

The Emperor sits on a stone throne carved with rams' heads, the symbol of Aries, the sign the Golden Dawn tradition gives him. Behind him rise bare mountains. He made his place by effort and keeps it by being dependable. As a birth card, the Emperor suggests a person who sets limits, takes responsibility and thinks about what will still stand in twenty years. Protecting people is as much a part of the job as ruling them. The lesson is to hold authority without letting it harden into control.

Strengths

Leadership, reliability, a gift for planning and the backbone to make hard calls.

Challenges

Rigidity, wanting the last word, distrust of feelings that don't fit the plan, and carrying everyone's load.

With its partner cards

The Emperor turns up as the Soul card under Death or under the Fool, and the two pairings feel very different. With Death, structures are built and then rebuilt: the Emperor learns that a lasting order is one that can let parts of itself go. With the Fool, the steady ruler is paired with the free spirit, and readers see a life swinging between the urge to plan everything and the urge to leap. For some birthdays the Emperor comes alone and carries the whole reading.

When it is your birth card

Greer's method adds the month, day and full year, then adds the digits until the total is 22 or less. In her terms the higher card of a pair is the Personality card and the lower one the Soul card. Between 1900 and 2030, the Emperor is a birth card for 11 percent of birthdays, about one in nine. It comes up in three ways: as the Soul card under the Fool, 22 and 4 (5.3 percent of birthdays, and only up to January 1, 1991); as the Soul card under Death, 13 and 4 (3.5 percent of birthdays); and on its own as a single card (2.3 percent of birthdays, and only from December 31, 1959 to January 1, 2018). That share holds steady in every decade, because the last card of any set is the date's total reduced to a single figure, and those spread evenly from 1 to 9. For example, someone born on June 6, 1972 adds 6 + 6 + 1972 = 1984, then 1 + 9 + 8 + 4 = 22, then 2 + 2 = 4. That gives the Fool and the Emperor (22 and 4).

How Cosmic Array reads it

Cosmic Array works out your birth cards from your date of birth alone with Greer's method, so no birth time is needed. The Architect blueprint lists them by name in the same panel as your Life Path, and the two always line up. A set that ends in the Emperor always goes with a Life Path of 4 or 22, because both reduce the same birthday digits.
