What it means
The Hierophant is a religious teacher seated between two pillars, raising a hand in blessing over two kneeling followers, with crossed keys at his feet. He is the bridge between a body of wisdom and the people who need it. As a birth card he points to a life shaped by schooling, mentors, faiths or professions with their own codes. Many Hierophant people end up teaching or advising, formally or not. The lesson of the card is choosing which traditions to keep: wisdom comes from understanding the rules well enough to know which ones still help.
Strengths
Patience as a teacher, loyalty, respect for what came before and a strong moral compass.
Challenges
Conformity, preaching, fear of breaking rank, and judging people who live by other codes.
With its partner cards
The Hierophant comes alone more often than it pairs, so for many people it is the whole reading. When it does pair, it sits under Temperance, the card of mixing. That combination puts tradition in the hands of someone willing to adapt it, and readers often see it in people who explain old ideas in new language.
When it is your birth card
Greer's method adds the month, day and full year, then adds the digits until the total is 22 or less. In her terms the higher card of a pair is the Personality card and the lower one the Soul card. Between 1900 and 2030, the Hierophant is a birth card for 11 percent of birthdays, about one in nine. It comes up in two ways: on its own as a single card (7.6 percent of birthdays, and only from December 31, 1906 to January 1, 2028); and as the Soul card under Temperance, 14 and 5 (3.5 percent of birthdays). That share holds steady in every decade, because the last card of any set is the date's total reduced to a single figure, and those spread evenly from 1 to 9. For example, someone born on July 3, 1975 adds 7 + 3 + 1975 = 1985, then 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 23, then 2 + 3 = 5. That gives the Hierophant (5).
How Cosmic Array reads it
Cosmic Array works out your birth cards from your date of birth alone with Greer's method, so no birth time is needed. The Architect blueprint lists them by name in the same panel as your Life Path, and the two always line up. A set that ends in the Hierophant always goes with a Life Path of 5, because both reduce the same birthday digits.
