Rowan Celtic Tree Sign Meaning

Rowan is the second sign of the Celtic tree calendar, covering January 21 to February 17, and its archetype is The Thinker. Tree calendar readers describe Rowan people as visionary and original, with a philosophical streak and ideas that tend to arrive ahead of their time. Its Ogham letter is Luis.

What it means

Rowan is the tree of the inner eye. Rowan people are said to see the world a little differently and to care more about ideas than about fitting in. They are often idealists with a humanitarian bent, quick to question how things are done and to sketch a better version. In company they can seem cool or detached, but the tradition says that is mostly a mind busy somewhere else. Give a Rowan a real problem and some freedom, and they come back with something nobody else thought of.

Strengths

Original thinking, a long view of where things are heading, independence of mind, quiet idealism, and a gift for explaining big ideas simply.

Challenges

Detachment that others read as coldness, impatience with slower minds, a stubborn streak once a principle is at stake, and plans that stay in the head too long.

Rowan dates and Ogham letter

Rowan runs from January 21 to February 17 (28 days). Its Ogham letter is Luis, the letter for the sound L. The dates come from the tree calendar Robert Graves set out in The White Goddess (1948): thirteen 28-day months named after Ogham letters in his Beth-Luis-Nion order, plus one spare day, December 23. It is a modern system inspired by the Ogham, not a calendar recorded from the ancient Druids, and scholars think only some of the Ogham letter names first meant trees. Every Rowan birthday has an Aquarius Sun.

The rowan in folklore

In Scotland and Ireland rowan was planted by the door, and its twigs were hung over cattle byres to keep witchcraft away; an old Scottish rhyme names 'rowan tree and red thread' as protection against witches. Look at the base of a rowan berry and you will find a tiny five-pointed star. The medieval word-riddles for the Ogham letters call Luis 'lustre of the eye', which suits a sign about seeing clearly.

How Cosmic Array reads it

Your tree depends only on the day and month you were born, so the year and birth time don't change it. The Architect blueprint shows your Celtic tree next to your Chinese animal, Mayan sign and Egyptian deity, and its written synthesis can set the tree against your Western Sun, Moon and Rising.
