Ahau Mayan Day Sign Meaning

Ahau is the twentieth and last day sign of the Maya Tzolkin, the sign of the sun and the lord, and in K'iche' it is Ajpu, the blowgun hunter. People born on an Ahau day are said to be natural leaders and often artists, with a warm, sunny presence. Ajpu is also the name of the hero twin of the Popol Vuh who outwitted the lords of death.

What it means

Ahau means lord, and the sign carries the sun and the idea of mastery. In the Popol Vuh, the twins Hunahpu (Ajpu) and Xbalanque go down to Xibalba, beat the lords of the underworld at their own games and rise into the sky as the sun and the moon. Ajpu people are said to be brave and talented, and daykeepers link the day to the ancestors and to coming through hard times. Ahau also closes the count of twenty before Imix starts it again, and the great cycles of the Long Count end on Ahau days.

Strengths

Leadership, generosity, courage, artistic talent, and a warmth that people gather around.

Challenges

Pride, a need to be admired, and real trouble asking for help.

Dates

Ahau comes around every 20 days, because the Tzolkin runs through its 20 day signs in a fixed order, with Cauac before it and Imix after it. Each time it returns it carries a new number from 1 to 13, so one exact pairing of number and sign comes back only every 260 days. The next four Ahau days on or after October 23, 2026 are October 29, 2026, November 18, 2026, December 8, 2026 and December 28, 2026. The best known Ahau day is December 21, 2012, when the Maya Long Count completed its 13th b'ak'tun: it was 4 Ahau, and every Ahau day since has fallen a multiple of 20 days after it. Someone born on January 1, 2011, for example, has Ahau as their day sign.

How Cosmic Array reads it

Cosmic Array counts your day sign in the traditional Tzolkin, using the standard GMT correlation (584283) between the Maya Long Count and our calendar, the count that lines up with the one highland daykeepers still keep. The Architect blueprint shows your day sign by its Yucatec name, Ahau, and reads it alongside your other ancient calendar signs and the rest of your chart. It shows the sign only, not the number from 1 to 13 that completes a full Tzolkin date. The colour name Yellow Sun comes from the Dreamspell, a modern system created by Jose Arguelles. Dreamspell runs on a different day count, so a Dreamspell calculator may show a different sign for the same birthday.
