The Magician as Your Birth Tarot Card

The Magician as a birth tarot card describes someone here to turn ideas into real things with the skills and tools at hand. It is card I of the Major Arcana. Tarot readers see Magician people as quick, inventive and persuasive, at their best when they commit to one plan and see it through.

What it means

The Magician stands at a table with one hand raised, and the four suit symbols lie in front of him: a cup, a sword, a pentacle and a wand. Everything he needs is already there. As a birth card it points to a life built on making things happen, through talk, craft, deals or plain nerve. The lesson readers attach to it is focus. A Magician who scatters energy across ten projects ends up with clever tricks; one who picks a single aim and works it gets results. Words matter too, since the Golden Dawn tradition links the card with Mercury.

Strengths

Resourcefulness, a gift for words, confidence in front of people and the knack of starting something from almost nothing.

Challenges

Spreading yourself thin, talking a plan up before it exists, and a streak of showmanship that can slide into manipulation.

With its partner cards

The Magician never arrives alone in this method. It always sits under Wheel of Fortune, and readers take that pairing as skill meeting timing: the Wheel brings the turns of luck and the Magician decides what to do with them. For many older birthdays it sits at the base of the Sun's three-card set instead, where the Sun adds warmth and visibility and asks the Magician to use its talents in the open.

When it is your birth card

Greer's method adds the month, day and full year, then adds the digits until the total is 22 or less. In her terms the higher card of a pair is the Personality card and the lower one the Soul card. Between 1900 and 2030, the Magician is a birth card for 11 percent of birthdays, about one in nine. It comes up in two ways: inside the Sun's three-card set, 19, 10 and 1 (6.2 percent of birthdays, and only up to January 1, 1988); and as the Soul card under Wheel of Fortune, 10 and 1 (4.9 percent of birthdays, and only from December 31, 1956 on). That share holds steady in every decade, because the last card of any set is the date's total reduced to a single figure, and those spread evenly from 1 to 9. For example, someone born on February 7, 1963 adds 2 + 7 + 1963 = 1972, then 1 + 9 + 7 + 2 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. That gives the Sun, Wheel of Fortune and the Magician (19, 10 and 1).

How Cosmic Array reads it

Cosmic Array works out your birth cards from your date of birth alone with Greer's method, so no birth time is needed. The Architect blueprint lists them by name in the same panel as your Life Path, and the two always line up. A set that ends in the Magician always goes with a Life Path of 1, because both reduce the same birthday digits.
