What it means
An old man stands on a snowy peak holding a lantern with a six-pointed star inside it. He has climbed away from the crowd, but the lantern is raised: whatever he finds up there is meant to be seen. As a birth card the Hermit points to a life of study, solitude and slow wisdom. Hermit people often need more time alone than others understand, and they distrust easy answers. The card's lesson comes in two halves. First go inward. Then come back down the mountain and share what you found, which is the half Hermits tend to skip.
Strengths
Depth, patience, discernment, real expertise, and a steadiness that makes people come to them for advice.
Challenges
Isolation, holding back from relationships, and perfectionism about when something is ready to share.
With its partner cards
The Hermit appears alone for many birthdays and otherwise as the Soul card under the Moon. With the Moon above it, the search goes into darker water: dreams, fears and things half seen. Readers see that pairing in people who find their wisdom by walking straight into confusion and coming out holding a light.
When it is your birth card
Greer's method adds the month, day and full year, then adds the digits until the total is 22 or less. In her terms the higher card of a pair is the Personality card and the lower one the Soul card. Between 1900 and 2030, the Hermit is a birth card for 11 percent of birthdays, about one in nine. It comes up in two ways: on its own as a single card (5.8 percent of birthdays, and only from December 31, 1946 on); and as the Soul card under the Moon, 18 and 9 (5.3 percent of birthdays, and only up to January 1, 1978). That share holds steady in every decade, because the last card of any set is the date's total reduced to a single figure, and those spread evenly from 1 to 9. For example, someone born on October 19, 1987 adds 10 + 19 + 1987 = 2016, then 2 + 0 + 1 + 6 = 9. That gives the Hermit (9).
How Cosmic Array reads it
Cosmic Array works out your birth cards from your date of birth alone with Greer's method, so no birth time is needed. The Architect blueprint lists them by name in the same panel as your Life Path, and the two always line up. A set that ends in the Hermit always goes with a Life Path of 9, because both reduce the same birthday digits.
