The Empress as Your Birth Tarot Card

The Empress as a birth tarot card describes someone here to nurture and create, whether that means children, gardens, art, businesses or communities. She is card III of the Major Arcana. Readers see Empress people as warm, sensual and generous, at home in the physical world.

What it means

The Empress sits in a field of ripe wheat, crowned with stars, with a heart-shaped shield marked with the symbol of Venus beside her. She is nature in full growth. As a birth card she points to a life measured by what you help to grow. Comfort, beauty and good food often matter to Empress people more than they admit, and they tend to make spaces where others relax. The card's lesson is about care that flows both ways: the Empress gives a lot, and she has to let the world feed her too.

Strengths

Creativity, warmth, patience with slow growth, an eye for beauty, and a talent for making people feel looked after.

Challenges

Smothering, overindulgence, and giving until there is nothing left for yourself.

With its partner cards

The Empress usually comes as the Soul card under the Hanged Man or under the World. Under the Hanged Man, creativity grows out of a pause: things ripen when the person stops forcing them. Under the World, the Empress's growth has a wider stage, and readers see a life that gathers many strands into a finished whole. Some birthdays give the Empress alone.

When it is your birth card

Greer's method adds the month, day and full year, then adds the digits until the total is 22 or less. In her terms the higher card of a pair is the Personality card and the lower one the Soul card. Between 1900 and 2030, the Empress is a birth card for 11 percent of birthdays, about one in nine. It comes up in three ways: as the Soul card under the World, 21 and 3 (5.9 percent of birthdays, and only up to January 1, 1990); as the Soul card under the Hanged Man, 12 and 3 (3.7 percent of birthdays); and on its own as a single card (1.5 percent of birthdays, and only from December 31, 1958 to January 1, 2008). That share holds steady in every decade, because the last card of any set is the date's total reduced to a single figure, and those spread evenly from 1 to 9. For example, someone born on April 19, 1969 adds 4 + 19 + 1969 = 1992, then 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21, then 2 + 1 = 3. That gives the World and the Empress (21 and 3).

How Cosmic Array reads it

Cosmic Array works out your birth cards from your date of birth alone with Greer's method, so no birth time is needed. The Architect blueprint lists them by name in the same panel as your Life Path, and the two always line up. A set that ends in the Empress always goes with a Life Path of 3, because both reduce the same birthday digits.
